Below you find three cartoons which should give you an idea about with which endings to use the masculine (der) , the feminin (die) and the neutral article (das). There are certain endings which usually, not always (!!), indicate you the article required.
der: the endings -or, -ling , -smus , -ig normally need the masculine form:

Please remember, and unfortunately I have to confess, it´s not the easiest topic of German...so it´s full of exceptions. BUT in general it´s always good to remember these endings which could be of a big help when you are unsure which article to use.
